Granville Woods
Granville Woods nasceu em Colombus Ohio (1856-1910). Migrou para o Missouri com apenas 16 anos onde trabalhou com bombas de incêndios nos caminhos de ferro. Mais tarde estudou engenharia electrónica e mecânica e tornou-se uma das pessoas responsáveis pela modernização dos caminhos de ferro.
Em 1884, obteve a sua primeira patente com a caldeira de vapor de água.
Woods patenteou mais de 35 invenções eléctricas e mecânicas nas quais se inclui o melhoramento do transmissor telefónico, um carro eléctrico cuja energia era recebida por fios condutores, um terceiro sistema automático de freio pneumático e o seu "Synchronous Multiplex Railway Telegraph" que veio permitir que se enviassem mensagens entre comboios em movimento. Este sistema, tornou a viagem de comboio muito mais segura.
